What was 'The Excession'? Nobody knew. That was the problem. It was a Galactic scale black swan event, certainly. Seemingly connected to the hyperspace energy grid above AND below real space simultaneously, something thought to be impossible, it seemed to consist of a time and space swallowing volume of fractally organised total darkness.

This view of it may be from somewhere perilously close to the Excession. It sits there in a haze of distorted light doing nothing but defying all the known laws of hyperspace physics; but if probed or attacked it is seemingly omnipotent and totally unpredictable in its response.

Trying to illustrate this SF monster was very bold indeed. I've no idea how I would have attempted it. It's a large, dark volume that is slightly fuzzy at the boundary, that's all anyone really knows. So this could well be it... I haven't marked it all that highly, but there is some very strong art here on dA and I must reserve the higher marks only for the best of it.

I am and ardent Iain Banks fan, with or without the 'M.' and it is pleasant and encouraging to see an artist attempt something like this.
